Homework intervention group.

Some of our students are really struggling this time of the year. They are "educationally disengaged” in and out of school. They don’t turn in assignments. They don’t complete anything. Some are just a physical presence. The kids are just going through the motions until summer.

I suggest that we establish a learning community based on homework intervention next fall. We must work with teachers, parents, administration, teachers and students. Is there anyone out there doing any work in this area? I would love to hear from you

This is a very fascinating idea and the fact that its being adressed is great. Really what needs to be done is concrete tracking of objectives currently mastered by each student and what needs to be done: essentially finding a way to get the kids invested in what they're doing. There is no magic formula to do this, but one positive way is giving each student a concrete way to see what it is they know, and what it is they need to know later and giving them extrinsic rewards later to lead to instrinsic education later. The problem with their apathy is that they most likely don't see the benefits of hard work leading to success, even though their college-bound friends should serve as a testament to that.

I guess my recommendation for that class would be for a very structured homework intervention and make it objective driven: a 20 to 50% increase in their homework scores by the end of the semester and have a concrete reward for that. Also track it: make a chart tracking the progress of those participating in the intervention.

Just my two cents, but it sounds like your one class is sufferring from what a majority of my kids suffer from as well.

You are absolutely correct Nathan. Many students are educationally detached learners. Why? Our educational system is poorly designed. Students are expected to fit into the established system. The school system should be designed around “the needs” of the students. What do student’s need to be active engaged learners? If you ask them they will tell you. Educators need to listen to the needs of kids. Students need dialog not monolog,

We are working on a homework intervention program. We will talk this summer. Thanks!
